Historia del Vía Crucis
Para católicos por todo el mundo, el Via Crucis es sinónimo con Cuaresma, Semana Santa y, especialmente, Viernes Santo. Esta devoción también se conoce como “Estaciones de la Cruz”, “Sendero de la Cruz”, y “Via Dolorosa.” Conmemora 14 eventos claves que tuvieron lugar el día que Jesucristo fue crucificado. La mayoría refieren a Sus últimos pasos por las calles de Jerusalén, cuando cargaba la Cruz.
Las Estaciones originaron en Europa en la época medieval cuando guerras previnieron que peregrinos cristianos visitaran la Tierra Santa. Pintores y escultores europeos crearon obras que mostraban escenas de Cristo en camino al monte del Calvario. Los fieles instalabon estas obras de arte por lo largo de alguna ruta de procesión. Hacer la devoción involucraba caminar la ruta entera, parando a rezar en cada “estación”.
Hoy, las imágenes de las Estaciones (o cruces sencillas que las representan) se encuentran en casi todas las iglesias católicas. Sirven principalmente para eventos litúrgicos durante Cuaresma. Pero también se pueden rezar las Estaciones en privado, en cualquier temporada del año, hasta en casa. Muchas organizaciones ofrecen folletos gratuitos o de precio modesto para este propósito.

Estación 4. Jesús se encuentra con su Santa Madre.
Estación 5. Simón de Cirene ayuda a Jesús a acarrear su cruz.

Estación 7. Jesús cae por segunda vez.
Estación 8. Jesús consuela las mujeres de Jerusalén.
Estación 9. Jesús cae por tercera vez.
Estación 10. Jesús es despojado de sus vestiduras.
Estación 11. Jesús es clavado a la cruz.
Estación 12. Jesús muere en la cruz.
Estación 13. Jesús es bajado de la cruz.
Estación 14. Jesús es colocado en el sepulcro.
